2008 State Farm MVC Tennis Championships

The University of Evansville tennis team will face second-seeded Wichita State in the first round of the 2008 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tennis Championships on Friday at Koch Family Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb.

The Aces picked up the seventh seed, finishing the season with a 2-6 MVC mark. Overall, the Aces finished the regular season 12-11 with a 10-5 record in non-conference play.

“We had a very good non-conference season with some outstanding play from our newcomers,” said head coach Steve Brockriede. “Conference was tough, as expected with the competition that we have.”

Newcomers Kate Chybowski and Pin Sorensen have shown strong performances in their first campaigns. Chybowski holds a 19-4 record at No. 2 singles going into the weekend. The freshman is currently tied with Brittany Brown (’06-07) for fourth at UE with 24 singles victories this season. Sorensen finished with the second best record at 11-9 in singles play. The duo combined for an 11-8 record at No. 1 doubles to lead the team.

Senior Sara Wilhoite will lead the Aces in her final campaign at UE. Wilhoite finished the regular season with a 10-8 record in singles, playing primarily at No. 3. Juniors Lisa Kawamoto and Allie Cox each picked up ten singles wins this spring. Junior Stephanie Millis and freshman Riette Kotze will round out the Aces’ lineup when they take on the Shockers.

“Wichita State is a nationally ranked team, so we expect a tough match,” said Brockriede. “The girls have worked hard all year, so I think they are ready to compete at their highest level.”

The Aces and Shockers will face off on Friday at 12:30 p.m. at Koch Family Tennis Center. The winner will face either Illinois State or Drake in the semi-finals on Saturday. The single-elimination tournament runs through Sunday.
