MARTIN,
Tenn.—The University of Evansville baseball team scored a season-high 15 runs on a season-high 19 hits Tuesday afternoon to fly past the host
University of
Tennessee at Martin Skyhawks by a score of 15-10 at Skyhawk Field in
Martin, Tennessee.
After the two teams traded five-run innings in the early going, Evansville would take a 6-5 in the fourth inning on a lead-off double by freshman outfielder Greg Wallace and an RBI single by sophomore catcher Andy Pascoe. UT-Martin would answer back with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to grab a 7-6 lead, before UE would use a four-run fifth inning to take the lead for good.
Wallace would plate the first run of UE’s four-run frame with an RBI ground out with the bases loaded. After a walk and a hit batsman brought home the second run of the inning for UE, Pascoe followed with a two-run single to move UE’s advantage to 10-7.
Evansville would tack on another run in the seventh inning on a bases-loaded walk to junior first baseman Derek Melton, before grabbing a 14-7 cushion with a three-run eighth inning. Former Evansville Memorial product Tom Freeman would then cap the scoring for the Purple Aces with a titanic solo home run to left-center field in the ninth inning to give UE a 15-7 lead. The Skyhawks would plate three runs in the bottom of the frame, but it would not be enough, as UE won its third non-conference game in a row.
Pascoe led Evansville’s 19-hit attack by going 4-for-4 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, and four RBI, as he reached base safely in all six trips to the plate on the afternoon. Wallace and junior shortstop Peter Tountas also collected three hits each for UE, while eight of the nine starters in the UE batting order collected at least one hit.
Sophomore reliever Corey Davisson (2-1) earned the victory for UE on the mound, scattering a pair of unearned runs on two base hits in 1.1 innings of work. Freshman right-hander Zach Taylor also pitched well in relief for UE, yielding just a pair of base hits in 4.0 scoreless innings of relief work.
Evansville (5-24 overall) will return to the diamond again tomorrow, as the Purple Aces will travel south to Murray, Kentucky to battle the Thoroughbreds of Murray State University. First-pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. Tennessee-Martin drops to 3-24 on the year with the loss.
