The University of Evansville baseball program was well-represented this summer on the summer league all-star game circuit, as UE pitchers
John Foley (Mt. Pulaski, Ill./Mt. Pulaski) and
Matt Netherton (Wichita, Kan./Trinity) and position players #T.J. Dailey# (Kansas City, Mo./Rockhurst) and
Derek Melton (Trenton, Ohio/Edgewood) shined in their respective league’s all-star showcase.
Both Foley and Netherton tossed scoreless innings of work in their respective all-star games, with Netherton earning the victory in the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League All-Star game last Wednesday. Netherton worked a perfect eighth inning for the Red All-Star Team in the Great Lakes League All-Star game, retiring all three batters he faced on infield ground outs. He then earned the win, as the Red Team scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally from a 3-1 deficit en route to a 7-3 victory. Netherton currently pitches for the Xenia (Ohio) Athletes In Action of the Great Lakes League.
Foley worked a scoreless fourth inning last night for the Central Illinois Collegiate League (CICL) All-Star team, as they defeated the Kentucky-Illinois-Tennessee (KIT) All-Stars, 7-6, at League Stadium in Huntingburg, Indiana. Foley, a member of the Danville (Illinois) Dans summer team, worked around a two-out walk with an inning-ending strikeout to record a scoreless frame on the mound.
Dailey also participated in the CICL-KIT League All-Star Game, as he started at catcher for the CICL squad. Dailey, playing in front of the hometown crowd as a member of the Dubois County (Indiana) Bombers of the CICL, went 1-for-1 with a single and a run scored in three-plus innings of work behind home plate. He was behind home plate for Foley’s scoreless fourth inning of work, before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the frame.
Melton also earned a start in the field in the Northwoods League All-Star game on July 14, as he went 1-for-3 as the starting first baseman for the South Division All-Stars. Batting clean-up, Melton helped the South Division All-Stars to an 8-4 victory in the Northwoods League All-Star game. He also participated in the league’s home run derby before the contest, representing the NL’s La Crosse (Wisconsin) Loggers.
Both Foley and Melton will be seniors this spring for head coach Wes Carroll’s Purple Aces squad, while Dailey and Netherton will be entering their sophomore campaigns at UE.
