The University of Evansville women's soccer team hosts Western Kentucky University in a 6:00 exhibition match Saturday at Black Beauty Field. Live video streaming of the women's match is available through the Aces All-Access link at http://www.gopurpleaces.com.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Krista McKendree, the UE women are trying to get back into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2001. Eight starters are back for a senior-dominated team that produced a 10-5-3 record and finished second in the Missouri Valley Conference last season. Heading the list are first-team all-conference players Julie Winkler and Mia Tofano, and Kayla Lambert, who is 11 points away from becoming the leading scorer in school history. UE will take on a Western Kentucky squad that finished 14-3-3 and won the Sun Belt Conference championship in 2007. The Lady Toppers return seven starters, including SBC Player of the Year Morgan Thomas and leading goal scorer Kristin Cocchiarella.
“As seniors, this is our last year to really show what we’re all about,” says Tofano. “We have a great team, great coaches, and everything we need to be successful. What better time to come out on top.”
Saturday's friendly is the second and final exhibition for Evansville prior to the Aug. 22 season opener against Wright State. The Aces tied Eastern Illinois 1-1 on the road Wednesday.
