Kayla Lambert and Mia Tofano have a lot in common, and now even more. The two University of Evansville soccer players were chosen today as the Brine/Missouri Valley Conference co-Offensive Players of the Week. Both are senior forwards, both are from Las Vegas, Nevada, and both played together on club teams in high school. Most recently, both scored two goals and contributed an assist in Evansville's 5-2 victory over Wright State in the season opener on Friday. Tofano scored the first two goals of the night, at 14:02 and 30:54. Lambert put the Aces up 4-1 at 45:44 and 5-2 at 88:15. Lambert assisted on Tofano's first goal, and Tofano assisted on Lambert's last goal.
Lambert's five points moved her from a tie for fifth place to sole possession of third place on the Missouri Valley Conference all-time scoring list with 101 career points. She passed Jamie Hautzinger (96) of Missouri State, Tracie Strother (97) of Eastern Illinois and Beth Aussin (99) of Eastern Illinois. In front of Lambert are Krissy Meek (106) of Evansville and Annie Wayland (126) of Illinois State. Lambert, with 39 goals and 23 assists in her career, is the only active player within reach of Wayland's league record.
Tofano is now among the Aces' top 10 scorers even though she is just starting her third season at Evansville. Tofano's two goals and one assist moved her from 13th to ninth in career scoring at UE with 50 points. She also moved from 10th to seventh in career goals with 20. Tofano transferred to Evansville from St. Mary's (Cal.) College after her freshman year, in large part because of her friendship with Lambert.
Evansville's five goals on Friday tied the UE record for most goals in a season opener. The 1995 team beat Kansas 5-1 to begin the season. Friday's match was also the head coaching debut for Krista McKendree, an All-America defender for the Aces and the 2000 Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year who returned to her alma mater in 2005 as an assistant coach.
