RADFORD, Va. -- The University of Evansville has a new all-time scoring leader. Senior forward Kayla Lambert collected the 106th and 107th points of her illustrious career this afternoon, scoring the tying goal early in the second half in a 2-2 draw at Radford. The previous school record of 106 was set by Krissy Meek Engelbrecht in 1999.
Now Lambert is within reach of the Missouri Valley Conference record. The only player she trails is former Illinois State great Annie Wayland, who scored 126 points in her career. Lambert's 107 career points include 42 goals and 23 assists.
"It's exciting (to set the record), but my ultimate goal is to win conference and get to the NCAA Tournament," Lambert said after Sunday's match. "This is the last chance for all eight seniors, and we've all worked hard to leave this program better than when we came in.
Added Coach Krista McKendree, "Kayla's work-rate on and off the ball has been tremendous. She worked very hard this summer to prepare and it's definitely paying off for her. She deserves every honor and award that has come her way."
Radford (1-0-1) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead Sunday before the 1-1-1 Aces began their comeback. Senior midfielder Danielle Brand scored her first goal of the season at 42:03 to bring Evansville within one goal at the break, and Lambert scored her historic goal at 54:24 to knot the score. Both teams had opportunities in regulation and in both 10-minute overtime periods, but the defenses held tight. Goalkeeper Lisa Lubke preserved the tie for the home team, making 10 saves. She stopped four shots from Lambert, who had a total of five attempts on goal this afternoon. Sophomore Theresa Bagby came up with five saves for the Aces. Evansville outshot the Highlanders 24-13, putting 12 shots on goal compared to Radford's seven.
The Aces are off until Friday, when they host Morehead State at 7:00 CDT at Black Beauty Field.
