There weren't many opportunities to score, but
Mia Tofano's one and only turned into the game-winner Tuesday night. The University of Evansville senior forward scored the lone goal and the Aces extended their winning streak to four in the victory over the University of Kentucky Wildcats at UE's Black Beauty Field.
The Aces are now 5-1-1 heading into Friday's match at Ohio State. This is the first time UE has won four in a row since 2005.
Tofano's goal came at 22:39 when defender
Kasey Kutzler fed a through ball down the right side. Tofano outraced UK's defense and sent a hard shot past Wildcat goalkeeper Sydney Hiance for her fifth tally of the season. Tofano's goal was Evansville's only shot on goal.
Then it became Evansville goalkeeper Theresa Bagby's turn to hold on to the lead, and she did just that. Bagby made a career high eight saves and defender Kellee Widener turned away another shot on goal as the Aces hung on for their third shutout thidespite being outshot 24-9.
"It was a highly contested game for 90 minutes, and a really good win," said UE coach
Krista McKendree. "It's really good to see the girls put that much heart and effort into the game for 90 minutes. Kentucky is a very athletic team. It's good we didn't allow them to come in here and make it a 4-0 or 4-1 game like it was last year at their place."
Evansville has now outscored the opposition 8-1 in its last four matches.
