COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Opponents haven't been able to figure out Evansville's defense lately, but it took Ohio State's women's soccer team less than two minutes to find the back of the net Friday night. The Buckeyes scored at 1:53, then added two more goals to put an end to the Aces' four-match winning streak with a 3-1 victory over UE.
Now 5-2-1, Evansville had allowed only one goal in the previous four matches.
"We were very, very sluggish in the beginning, and we made some bad decisions in the defensive third that led to their first goal," coach Krista McKendree said. "It really hurts us when we start so slowly on the road. We finally put some pressure on late in the game and created some intensity that got us some chances, but it was 3-0 by that time."
Paige Maxwell scored the quick goal in the opening minutes for 1-4-2 Ohio State, and the Buckeyes went up 2-0 late in the first half with a goal by Lisa Collison. Ohio State made it 3-0 at 72:29 on Taylor Moront's goal before Evansville finally broke through with an own goal at 81:50 that came about when OSU goalkeeper Lauren Robertson cleared a ball that deflected off one of her own players and into the goal.
Evansville finished with 10 shots, but only one on goal. Ohio State had a total of 19 shots, with seven on goal. The Aces play again away from home Monday at Southeast Missouri.
