The University of Evansville softball team was recently announced by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association as one of the Girls Got Game Top Ten All-Academic Teams. The award is based on team grade point averages submitted for the 2007-2008 academic year. This program honors high school and collegiate softball teams for their success in the classroom.
The Aces finished seventh in the standings, carrying a 3.420 team GPA for the year. Seven players received a 3.5 GPA or higher during at least one semester of the 2007-2008 year. Brittany Herald and Lissa Fehlman were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete team for their academic and athletic efforts last season.
“I couldn't be more proud and thrilled for our players and program,” said UE head coach Gwen Lewis. “This is a huge honor for University of Evansville. We emphasize and embrace the fact that our players are students first and athletes second. Anytime you receive an award of this magnitude it is extremely gratifying. Peg Boardman is our (academic) coaching staff liaison that deserves a lot of credit for this award. She monitors and makes sure that our athletes meet their deadlines, get tutors, go to study tables, checks their grades, maintains relationships with our professors and most of all encourages them to reach their intellectual capacity in the classroom.”
