EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Evansville used a timely first half goal by
Colleen Marty to pull ahead of Morehead State and rode steady defensive play to top the Eagles 1-0 at Black Beauty Field Friday night.
The Aces are now 2-1-1 heading into Sunday's 5:30 p.m. home match against Austin Peay. Morehead State is 1-4-0.
Marty, a freshman attacking player, had entered the match only five minutes earlier when the Aces strung together passes from
Kasey Kutzler and
Kayla Lambert to find her open in the right side of the box. Marty's blast from 10 yards away eluded MSU goalkeeper Sam Yocke and ended up being the game-winning goal.
"Colleen's been a pleasant surprise and even an impact player for us," said coach
Krista McKendree. "You never know how freshmen are going to react as they adjust to this level, but we couldn't have asked for more from Colleen. She's calm, good with the ball, and has added something in every single game."
Evansville's defensive four of Kutzler,
Kara Murphy,
Katelyn Smith and
Kasey Cartwright, along with goalkeeper Theresa Bagby, turned away numerous Morehead State scoring opportunities. The Eagles outshot the Aces 16-10, and both teams put three shots on goal. It was Evansville's first shutout of the season.
