EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Former University of Evansville All-American Jamey Carroll will likely join Evansville native Don Mattingly in Dodger blue this season, as Carroll has agreed to a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, pending a physical, according to the Dodgers’ website Dodgers.com.
Carroll becomes the first free agent signing this winter by the Dodgers, who won the National League West Division crown this past season. Carroll spent the past two years as a member of the Cleveland Indians, where he hit .276 this past season in 93 games.
The 2010 season will be Carroll’s ninth in the Major Leagues. He is a career .273 hitter in 786 career games at the Major League level.   Carroll began his Major League career in 2002 with the then-Montreal Expos and has played for the Expos, Washington Nationals, Colorado Rockies, and Indians. Carroll helped the Rockies to the World Series in 2007.
Carroll excelled on the diamond at UE from 1994-96, earning all-Missouri Valley Conference, all-region, and All-America honors at shortstop in 1996. Carroll currently ranks among UE’s career leaders in batting average (4th-.348), hits (9th-236), runs scored (9th-150), triples (6th-12), and stolen bases (6th-68). He was inducted into the UE Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005 and was named to the Missouri Valley Conference’s All-Centennial team in 2007. Jamey Carroll is the older brother of current UE baseball head coach Wes Carroll.
