EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville baseball team took advantage of three errors by the IPFW Mastodons to score two unearned runs and secured a 2-1 victory on the opening day of the 2009 Dunn Hospitality Classic at Charles H. Braun Stadium in Evansville, Ind.

John Foley pitched 7 2/3 innings of stellar baseball, scattering four hits and allowing only one run while striking out three and walking two. Junior Tom Heithoff came in relief of Foley and struck out IPFW’s Garrett Segraves to end the Mastodon’s only scoring threat. Heithoff (1-0) finished out the final 1 1/3 innings in perfect fashion to pick up the win.

“Foley is a great college pitcher,” said head coach Wes Carroll. “Anytime you can get that type of performance from your pitcher, you can get a win.

“That performance was all you can ask for from your Friday guy.”

The Aces notched the first run of the game in the seventh, when the Mastodons tallied two errors on a single play. After Nate Smith dropped a sacrifice bunt down the third base line, IPFW third baseman Mark Carden attempted to get Greg Wallace out a second base, but the ball went into center field allowing Wallace to reach third base. IPFW’s center fielder Segraves misplayed the ball as well, allowing Wallace to score the first run of the game.

IPFW responded in the top of the eighth, as second baseman Jordan Kohler crossed the plate on an RBI single by right fielder J.J. Short. Evansville answered quickly, tallying the game’s eventual winning run in the bottom of the frame. The Aces load the bases in the eighth and Nate Smith took advantage, singling to center field to plate Andy Smith for the game’s final run.

Evansville improves to 4-8 on the season with win, while IPFW falls to 2-7.

In the early game of the Dunn Hospitality Classic, Purdue topped Mississippi Valley State by a score of 4-1, thanks in large part to a strong pitching performance from Matt Bischoff. Bischoff picked up the win, allowing just one run and four hits over eight innings while striking out 12 Delta Devil batters.

“We have to come ready to play tomorrow,” said head coach Carroll. “Purdue is a very solid team. We will look to get a win and get on a roll to head into Missouri Valley Conference play next weekend.”

The second day of the 2009 Dunn Hospitality Classic will see IPFW and Mississippi Valley State face off at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. The Aces will take on Purdue in the second game, with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m.
