Baseball Aces Travel To Lipscomb On Tuesday

3/16/2009 4:05:42 PM

The University of Evansville baseball team will look to build on their late game heroics from the Dunn Hospitality Classic when they travel south to Nashville, Tenn. to take on the Lipscomb University Bisons.  Evansville will bring a 5-9 record into the contest while Lipscomb will counter with a season record of 8-8.  First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.

The Aces enjoyed the warmer weather that moved into the Evansville area over the weekend, pounding out 21 hits over three games.  While the UE bats got hot over the weekend, the Evansville pitching staff caught fire.  Seven Aces’ pitchers combined for a 1.33 team ERA and a 2-1 record over the weekend, allowing just two extra base hits.

Nate Smith and Cody Fick lead the Aces offense in to the mid-week matchup with the Bisons, both carrying double-digit hit streaks.  Fick’s hit streak currently rests at 14 games as he leads UE with a .431 batting average, three home runs and 12 RBIs.  Smith’s hit streak has risen to 13 games as the sophomore outfielder has hit .386 on the season, including going 5-10 over this last weekend.

Lipscomb enters Tuesday’s game with a three game winning streak after sweeping a weekend series with fellow Atlantic Sun Conference member South Carolina Upstate.  The Bisons saw their offense get going last weekend as well, scoring 20 runs over the two games of a doubleheader on Sunday.  LU brings a team batting average of .242 into the game, led by senior first baseman Justin Sanders, who is hitting .455 this season with 13 extra base hits, including two home runs and 13 RBIs.

Evansville leads the all-time series over Lipscomb, 7-4, but lost the only game between the teams, 8-5, at Braun Stadium last season.  Junior RHP Jared Baehl (0-0, 5.87 ERA) will take the mound for the Aces.  Lipscomb has yet to announce a starting pitcher.
