The University of Evansville baseball team will wrap up a seven-game home stand this weekend at Charles H. Braun Stadium, as the Purple Aces will host the high-flying Creighton University Bluejays in a three-game Missouri Valley Conference series. The series begins Friday night at 6:00 p.m. in a game that can be heard live on 91.5 F.M.-WUEV.
Evansville will bring a 10-14 overall record and 2-4 Valley mark into this weekend’s series after picking up its second-straight victory on Wednesday night over Tennessee-Martin by a score of 9-1. Senior infielder Andy Smith continued his recent hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with two RBI against the Skyhawks to extend his current hitting streak to five games. Smith has hit a blistering .474 (9-for-19) over the last five games, while knocking two doubles and driving in five RBI.
Overall, sophomore infielder Cody Fick continues to anchor the UE offense with a .376 average, five home runs, and 22 RBI. Fick has hit safely in nine-straight games, and in 23 of his 24 games overall as a Purple Ace, while ranking among the MVC’s leaders in batting average (6th-.376), slugging percentage (3rd-.634), hits (3rd-35), doubles (3rd-9), home runs (3rd-5), and hit-by-pitches (2nd-8). He has not only hit safely in nine-straight games, but he has also driven in at least one run in five consecutive games, including posting back-to-back three-RBI contests in UE’s wins over Northern Iowa and UT Martin this week.
Creighton, meanwhile, will bring a 12-14 overall record into this weekend’s series. After a slow start, the Bluejays have won eight out of the last 10 games, including going 5-1 in MVC play to rank third in the league standings entering the weekend. Creighton will bring the MVC’s top hitting attack into this weekend’s series, led by junior outfielder Robbie Knight’s .381 average. As a team, the Bluejays have seven regular position starters hitting above .300 so far this year, as Creighton hits a league-best .314 overall. Junior outfielder T.J. Roemmich provides the power for the lineup with an MVC-best six home runs this year.
All-time, Creighton leads the series with Evansville, 32-21. The series will begin Friday night at 6:00 p.m. and continue on both Saturday (2:00 p.m.) and Sunday (1:00 p.m.) afternoon, weather permitting.
