Baseball Travels To Murray State Tuesday

4/6/2009 3:30:32 PM

The college baseball season will officially hit the mid-point for the University of Evansville baseball team on Tuesday, as the Purple Aces will take the field for the 28th time this season as UE will travel south to Murray, Kentucky to battle the Thoroughbreds of Murray State University.  First-pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.

Evansville will bring an 11-16 overall record into Tuesday’s game, after suffering a tough 10-5 10-inning loss to Creighton on Sunday.  The Purple Aces were able to rally for five runs in the final four innings to force extra-innings on Sunday, but a five-run 10th inning and a nearly three-hour rain delay did in the Purple Aces.  Junior outfielder Alex Acheson did extend his personal-best hitting streak to six games though with a two-run home run to left field in the seventh inning.  Acheson has been on fire over the last six games, hitting .476 (10-for-21) with two doubles, two home runs, and seven RBI to raise his season batting average to an even .300.

Murray State will bring an 18-11 overall record into Tuesday’s games after dropping a pair of Ohio Valley Conference contests to nationally-ranked Eastern Illinois on Saturday.  The Thoroughbreds are paced offensively by junior first baseman Wes Cunningham, who will bring a .455 batting average, six home runs, and 33 RBI into Tuesday’s contest.  As a team, the Thoroughbreds hit .317 overall, with five everyday starters owning batting averages above .318 on the season entering Tuesday’s action.

Tuesday’s game will begin the annual home-and-home series between UE and Murray State.  The Thoroughbreds will make a return trip to Evansville next Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.  Overall, Evansville owns a 25-11 advantage in the all-time series over Murray State.
