Aces Split Senior Day Games In Extras

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Evansville softball team gave its senior a win on senior day as the Aces split their doubleheader with Illinois State in the last weekend of Missouri Valley Conference play at Cooper Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Both games went extra innings, with the Redbirds taking the first game 5-2 in 10 innings, and the Aces winning the second, 9-8, in eight innings.

Game 1
The Redbird struck for three runs in the top of the 10th inning on two hits and an error to take a 5-2 win.

Illinois State took an early lead with a leadoff home run by Nikki Stansel in the top half of the first inning. The Redbirds added a run in the fourth inning on doubles by Michelle Henderson and Kaprice Williams to make the lead, 2-0.

The Aces tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom half of the sixth inning as two of the Aces’ seniors accounted for runs. Senior Kristen Shirk drew a leadoff walk followed by a single by Jen Stahlhut. Kylie Wagner hit an infield single to load the bases, and senior Amanda Ockomon knocked in two runs with a single into right field to score Shirk and Stahlhut.

The Redbirds had an opportunity to take the lead in the ninth inning as Stansell was hit and Casey Gorrell walked to put runners on with one out. Amber Smith hit a single to center, and Stansell was thrown out at home on a throw from Jamie Lindauer in centerfield.

With two outs in the 10th inning, Megan Warner walked to put two runners on for Beth Current who doubled in two runs and scored on an overthrow to give the Redbirds an eventual 5-2 win.

Shirk was 2-for-3 with a walk in the game to lead the team as Wager added two hits. Stahlhut and Ockomon had hits while Ockomon was credited with both RBI in the game for the Aces.

Jen McKee took the loss as she came in to pitch in the eighth inning and gave up one earned run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Warner took the win, pitching five innings and only gave up a leadoff hit while striking out one.

Game 2
The Aces came back from an 8-1 deficit in the second game and eventually took a 9-8 win in the eighth inning.

The Aces got on the board first with a run in the second inning. Annie Vincelett reached on an error to lead off the inning. Maggie Little singled and was thrown out on a fielder’s choice hit by Allison Aguilera. After two outs, Lindauer hit a single to rightfield to score Aguilera to give the Aces a 1-0 lead.

The Redbirds answered with four runs in the third inning on five consecutive two-out hits by Gorrell, Smith, Abby Olson, Henderson, and Katie Mathis to take a 4-1 lead.

They matched it with four more runs in the fourth. With two outs, Stansell singled and scored on a home run by Gorrell. After a walk by Smith, Olson drove in two more runs on a homer to deep center.

The Aces scored three in the fourth and three in the fifth to pull within a run. McKee walked to lead off the fourth and advance to third on a double by senior Lissa Fehlman. Wagner doubled in two runs to score McKee and Fehlman, while Stahlhut doubled in Wagner for the third run.

Vincelett reached on an error to lead off the fifth and came around to score on a double by McKee. Fehlman added two runs with her sixth home run of the season to make the score, 8-7.

Stahlhut tied the game with a single and advancing to second on a wild pitch and scoring on a wild pitch.

Wagner walked to lead off the eighth inning, and Ockomon doubled to put runners at second and third. With two outs in the inning, Little hit the game winning single down the right field line that allowed Wagner to score the winning run.

Stahlhut was 3-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI to lead the team while Wagner added two hits and two RBI.

McKee took the win, tossing four and a third innings and did not give up an earned run on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Smith was tagged with the loss, pitching two and two thirds innings and giving up two earned runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout.

The Aces will close out their season with a single game with Illinois State at noon on Sunday.
