CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- University of Evansville women's soccer coach Krista McKendree knows she has to count on young players this season after losing five starters to graduation. On Sunday, two freshmen combined for the only goal of the match as the Aces began the regular season with a 1-0 win at Southeast Missouri. It was the fifth consecutive year in which UE started the season with a victory.
The lone tally came in the 53rd minute when freshman goalkeeper Chaviel Harrison booted a goal kick that found freshman forward Kristen Davis between two defenders. Davis got past both and put her shot just inside the far post.
"I was really happy with the effort, and the fact that we controlled the ball pretty well," McKendree said. "They outshot us (21-6), but not many of their shots were in close. Our defense did a good job of not letting their attacking players get behind us."
Junior Theresa Bagby played the first half in goal before Harrison took over for the second period. The two combined for 11 saves.
SEMO is now 1-1 after beating Indiana State 1-0 in overtime Friday. Evansville plays again Friday at Indiana.
