TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- It was cold outside, and just about as cold inside the Hulman Center for the University of Evansville Purple Aces Sunday afternoon. The Aces (6-9, 0-5) hit only 12 of their first 43 shots and fell to the Sycamores (11-5, 3-2) 69-55.
Indiana State built a 29-19 halftime lead behind Harry Marshall's 12 points and a zone defense that held Evansville to 8-of-28 shooting in the first 20 minutes. The Aces could get no closer than 10 in the second half, and Indiana State eventually went up by 25 at 55-30 with 10 minutes to go on a Jordan Printy three-pointer.
The Aces ended up shooting 34 percent on 20-for-59 shooting, with Colt Ryan leading the way with 21 points. Denver Holmes also reached double figures with 10. The Sycamores hit 22 of 53 shots for 41 percent. They also outscored the Aces from the free throw line, 15-8. Marshall scored 19, and Aaron Carter came off the bench to add 13.
"We have to re-evaluate everything right now," said UE Coach Marty Simmons. "We need to find ways to get Denver and Colt open more often. Against their zone in the first half, we didn't play with the aggressiveness we needed to. And we still struggle with guarding the basketball. Indiana State is a quick and aggressive team, and they did a good job of finding the open man in the second half."
Evansville was playing without freshman guard Ned Cox, who suffered an eye injury in practice Friday. Because of injuries, UE hasn't played a game with the entire team healthy since Dec. 8. The Sycamores were playing without leading scorer and rebounder Dwayne Lathan, who suffered a leg injury in Wednesday's overtime loss at Bradley.
The Aces play their second consecutive road game Wednesday, meeting Illinois State for the second time within a week. The Redbirds won 82-63 at Roberts Stadium on Wednesday.
