Most of the 2010 season for the University of Evansville women’s soccer team (3-8-1, 0-2-0) has been spent away from home, but coach Krista McKendree’s Aces finally get to unpack their bags this week. Saturday’s 5:00 match against defending Missouri Valley Conference champion Illinois State (5-6-1, 1-1-1) begins a four-match homestand. The match can be heard on 91.5 WUEV-FM http://www.wuev.evansville.edu
The homefield advantage has meant a lot for Evansville this year. The Aces are 2-1-1 at McCutchan Stadium, and 1-7 on the road.
It’s been a struggle offensively for both Evansville and Illinois State this season, although the Aces’ goal scoring ability has picked up lately. The Aces have been outscored 21-10, but they had a 7-5 advantage in goals in the four matches prior to last Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Creighton. Freshman Breanna Beine (3) and junior Kasey Cartwright (2) are the top scorers for UE. Six of Evansville’s 10 goals have come from freshmen, including three from Beine, and one each from Vanessa Legault-Cordisco, Lauren Tiernan and Stephanie Thompson.
The 5-6-1 Redbirds have had even less luck finding the net. They have been outscored 14-8, and have been shut out in five of their last six matches. Illinois State’s only goals since Sept. 10 came in a 2-0 win at Drake in the Oct. 3 MVC opener.
