EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- In a match that featured 45 shots, the one and only that went in belonged to the University of Evansville and gave the Purple Aces' women's soccer team its first Missouri Valley Conference victory Wednesday night.
Freshman Kaitlin Robinett scored for the third time in two games, this time just three minutes and 16 seconds into the match, and Evansville withstood 28 shots from the Sycamores to win 1-0. UE improved to 4-9-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the Valley. Indiana State is 8-8-1 and 2-3-0.
Robinett's tally was set up by a cross from Vanessa Legault-Cordisco that produced a scramble in front of the Indiana State goal. Robinett punched it toward Indiana State goalkeeper Emily Lahay, who got a hand on the ball but couldn't keep it from crossing the line.
The rest of the match was a shootout, with Indiana State putting 12 of its 28 shots on goal and the Aces putting seven of their 17 shots on goal. Alison Gasparovich led the Sycamores with six shots and Robinett, a converted defender, led the Aces from her forward position with four. UE goalkeeper Chaviel Harrison made 12 saves to earn her first solo shutout of the season. Lahay made six stops for the Sycamores.
UE will go after its second straight victory at home Friday against non-conference opponent Loyola at 7:00.
