Not only did the University of Evansville women's soccer team win Sunday on Senior Day, the Aces also clinched a berth in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament.
Freshmen Breanna Beine and Kaitlin Robinett combined for Evansville's first three goals in Sunday's 4-1 victory over Northern Iowa at McCutchan Stadium, clinching either the #4, #5 or #6 position for UE in the tournament. The Aces are now 2-3 in the MVC and 5-10-1 overall. They close out the regular season Thursday at Missouri State. UNI dropped to last place in the league at 1-4. The top six teams in the seven-team league advance to the tournament, which begins with two quarterfinal matches next weekend. Those games feature the third place team hosting the sixth place finisher, and number four hosting number five. The two winners advance to the Nov. 5 semifinals at Omaha, Neb. along with the first and second place teams. The championship match is Nov. 7.
Beine scored her team-high fifth goal of the season to begin the scoring Sunday at the 19:08 mark, but UNI's Megan Cameron put in a header at 43:15 for the equalizer going into halftime. That's how it stood for more than 30 minutes until the Aces scored three times in a six-minute span. First came Robinett's third goal of the season, when her blast from 20 yards soared over the head of UNI goalkeeper Erin Zaideman and into the goal at 76:43. Beine scored her second of the afternoon at 81:30, and Sara Ornelas, one of five seniors honored prior to the match, scored her first of the year to seal the deal at 82:20. The four goals were the most scored by Evansville since a 5-2 win at Creighton late in the 2008 season.
The Aces ended up with an 11-9 advantage in shots. Chaviel Harrison, who played the first 82:15 in goal before coming out for senior Theresa Elstone, made all four saves for Evansville.
