Singles Bracket Doubles Bracket
NORMAL, Ill. -- The Aces had six players in the semifinals on Saturday at the State Farm Missouri Valley Individual Tennis Championships. Junior Dora Kotsiou, senior Pin Sorenson and sophomore Carolyn Caire were the three singles players to advance to the finals on Sunday at Illinois State in Normal, Illinois.
Senior Kate Chybowski dropped her semifinals match to Aniko Kiss of Illinois State 3-6, 6-1, 4-6 and lost later in the day to Drake’s Manca Krizman 1-6, 6-4, 9-11 to finish fourth at number one singles. At number two, Kotsiou defeated Ariane Maack of Illinois State 6-1, 6-4; she plays Delia Damaschin of Wichita State on Sunday in the finals. Junior Aleksandra Dzakula won her match at number three singles over Jessica Kunzelmann of Northern Iowa 7-6 (8-4), 4-6, 11-9 to finish fifth. At number four, senior Ashton Schwerin lost to Krissy Lankelma of Northern Iowa 4-6, 2-6; Schwerin won her match later in the day over Hannah Esker of Illinois State by default to take third place.
Sorenson won by default over Jessica Labarte of Drake to advance to the number five finals against Gabriella Phillips Illinois State. At number six, Caire defeated Earlynn Lauer of Drake 6-2, 6-1 to move on to Sunday to play Stefanie Youngberg of Illinois State. Junior Jess Raatz lost to Ashton Nisbet of Illinois State 4-6, 6-1, 3-6, but won her later match against Ashley Oyakawa of Creighton 6-1, 6-2 to finish third at number seven singles.
In doubles, the Aces number one team of Chybowski/Kotsiou lost their first match of the day to Jennifer Dien/Melanie Delsart of Southern Illinois 4-8. The number one team also lost to Northern Iowa’s team of Phoebe Walker/Carla Gonzalez 4-8 to finish the tournament in fourth place. The number two doubles team of Sorenson/Schwerin defeated Leesa Cadwalker/Mary McMullan of Creighton 8-5; they defeated Drake’s Amanda Aragon/Jessica Labarte 9-7 to take fifth place.
