BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's 22-0 run in the second half put an end to the University of Evansville's upset hopes here Sunday afternoon as the Hoosiers prevailed 67-54.
Evansville led 29-21 late in the first half and still led 39-34 on
Kavon Lacey's basket with 16:05 to play. But that's when Maurice Creek began the Hoosiers' eight-minute shutout of the Aces. Creek, who had hit just 5 of 14 three-pointers all season, made three from beyond the arc in a four-minute span and also hit three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt. Creek energized his IU teammates defensively, too, and Evansville went eight minutes without a basket before
Pieter van Tongeren finally broke the drought by scoring a basket with 8:09 to play to bring the Aces within 15 at 56-41.
The Aces cut the deficit to 10 in the final three minutes, but Creek's fourth three-ball of the game sealed the win for Indiana
"We knew coming into the game we needed to take care of the ball and work our tails off to get good shots," said coach
Marty Simmons. "We did that pretty well in the first half, but not when Indiana started to go on a run. They're a very good team. Their defense made the difference."
Colt Ryan finished with 15 points to lead Evansville, van Tongeren added 10, and
Kenneth Harris scored nine points and led all rebounders with 10. Creek scored 19 and Verdell Jones added 18 for the 4-0 Hoosiers.
Evansville, now 2-1, plays at Middle Tennessee State Wednesday at 7:00 before heading to Indianapolis to play 2010 NCAA Tournament runnerup Butler on Saturday.
