Aces Tennis Looking To Continue Its Winning Ways

2/18/2010 2:09:48 PM

The University of Evansville tennis team is looking to extend its three-match win streak this weekend as the Purple Aces battle the Michigan State Spartans (4-4) and the Detroit Mercy Titans (0-6). It will be a homecoming for Head Coach Christine Bader, a Michigan State graduate who will be returning to her alma mater. At MSU, Bader was a two-time All-Big Ten performer and named team MVP during her senior year.

“I am thrilled to be going back to East Lansing this weekend," Bader said. "Not only will I be on familiar turf, but I'll be coaching against some of my old teammates. We competed in the Spartan Invitational this fall, so the girls will be familiar with the courts and level of competition. Last weekend our team took a big step in the right direction. We overcame some obstacles and our team unity was the best I have ever seen. Things finally clicked! This weekend we will have two competitive matches, and if we compete like we did last weekend, we will be successful again. Each weekend this team has improved, and their confidence on the court continues to get better.”

The Aces are 4-2 on the season heading into the weekend with wins over IPFW, Belmont, Eastern Kentucky and Murray State. At the No. 1 singles spot, junior Kate Chybowski has posted a perfect 6-0 record. At the No. 1 doubles position, Chybowski and partner Theadora Kotsiou have posted a 5-1 record. For the past two weekends the Aces have had strong performances from junior Pin Sorensen and sophomore Aleksandra Dzakula. Both athletes have played critical roles in the past three wins for the Aces.

The Aces play Michigan State on Saturday at 10 a.m. and then play Detroit on Sunday at 3 p.m. Both matches will take place in East Lansing, Michigan.
