University of Evansville junior outfielder
Greg Wallace (Nanaimo, British Columbia/Dover Bay S.S.) earned Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week honors on Monday after a monster week in which he hit .560 with seven extra-base hits, 10 runs scored, and 10 RBI. Wallace and the Purple Aces will return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m., as UE will host the nationally-ranked Louisville Cardinals in a contest that can be heard live on 91.5 F.M.-WUEV.
Wallace went 14-for-25 at the plate in UE’s five games last week, while knocking four doubles, two triples, a home run, and both scoring and driving in 10 runs apiece. He collected multi-hit games in each of UE’s five contests last week against Austin Peay, Saint Louis, and SIU Edwardsville, while also scoring runs in all five games. Wallace currently paces the UE offense with a .360 average, five home runs, and 27 RBI on the season, and he will ride a seven-game hitting streak into Tuesday’s contest against Louisville in which he has hit an even .500 (17-for-34).
Evansville will bring a 10-11 overall record into Tuesday’s game after sweeping a three-game series from SIU Edwardsville over the weekend. After a 3-9 start, UE has won seven of its last nine contests entering Tuesday’s game against the nationally-ranked Cardinals, who rank as high as seventh in the various collegiate baseball polls with a 17-2 overall record.
“We have learned a lot about our team over the last 21 games,” said UE head coach
Wes Carroll. “We started slowly, but I?think that was a combination of having a young team and not being able to be outside during the preseason. But, each time we have taken the diamond, we have gotten better, and that’s what you like to see as a head coach.
“We’ll find out even more about our team tomorrow against Louisville. When we played at Louisville at the beginning of the month, we started out well offensively, but couldn’t maintain that level of play, and some of our pitchers were still learning how to pitch at the college level. Now, a month later, we’ll see how we’ve progressed and this will be a good measuring stick for where we are at going into Missouri Valley Conference play this weekend.”
Louisville will bring a 17-2 overall record into Tuesday’s contest after winning two out of three games from Ball State at home over the weekend. At No. 7 nationally, Louisville will be the highest-ranked opponent to play at Braun Stadium since its was built in 2002. The Cardinals are led offensively by the three-pronged attack of sophomore infielder Ryan Wright (.405/4/25), senior infielder Adam Duvall (.386/6/19), and junior infielder Phil Wunderlich (.375/9/27), as those three players have accounted for 19 of Louisville’s 26 home runs on the season. Redshirt sophomore Stewart Ijames, from nearby Owensboro, Kentucky, also currently hits .343 with two home runs and 18 RBI for the Cardinals.
Evansville leads the all-time series over Louisville, 38-35, on the diamond. Louisville posted a 13-6 victory over Evansville at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky on March 3.
