Freshman pitcher Sam Johns (Bethalto, Ill./Civic Memorial) has been named this week's Vectren Student-Athlete of the Week after he helped the UE baseball team to a 3-2 victory over high-powered Dallas Baptist on Friday night with six solid innings on the mound.

Working against a Dallas Baptist offense which entered the weekend series ranked 11th nationally in team batting average (.347), fifth nationally in home runs (50), ninth nationally in doubles (81) and 28th overall in runs scored (249), Johns limited the Patriots to just six singles and a double while scattering a pair of runs in 6.0 innings of work.  He retired the first seven men he faced in order, before Dallas Baptist beat out an infield single.  Overall, he allowed just four men to reach scoring position in the outing, while recording four strikeouts and nine infield outs of his 18 outs recorded.

With the victory on the mound, Johns evened his overall record at 2-2 this year.  Johns and the Purple Aces will return to action this afternoon at 3:00 p.m. as UE will travel to Murray, Kentucky to take on the Murray State University Thoroughbreds in non-conference action.
