Wallace Picks Up Second Vectren Student-Athlete Of The Week Award

4/27/2010 8:48:57 AM

For the second time this year, University of Evansville junior baseball player Greg Wallace (Nanaimo, British Columbia/Dover Bay S.S.) has been named the Vectren Student-Athlete of the Week. Wallace hit .500, pounded out seven extra-base hits including three home runs, and drove in 14 RBI in just four games. Wallace helped UE to a 3-1 week on the diamond by continuing his torrid month of April by hitting an even .500 (9-for-18) in four games last week. Seven of his nine hits went for extra-bases, as he knocked three doubles, a triple, and three home runs, while scoring six runs and driving in 14 more. He had multiple extra-base hits in three of his four games, including posting his second multi-home run game of the year in Sunday’s 15-5 victory over Bradley. He also produced multi-hit and multi-RBI efforts in all four games last week, as he has now produced a multi-hit game and a multi-RBI contest in six-straight games for UE. Wallace began his week going 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI in UE’s 8-2 win over crosstown Division II power Southern Indiana, before going 7-for-13 with three home runs in a three-game series with league rival Bradley. He launched a home run and added a double in Friday night’s game against the Braves, before hitting two home runs, knocking a triple and driving in nine RBI in UE’s doubleheader sweep on Sunday. For the week, Wallace went 9-for-18 at the plate while posting a 1.278 slugging percentage and a .524 on-base percentage. He currently ranks third in the MVC in batting average at .398, while leading the league in both hits (68), RBI (62), triples (seven) and total bases (123). In fact, he has already closed to within five RBI of UE’s single-season record of 67, set by Pat Schulz in 1992. He has driven in 25 runs over the last two weeks while earning back-to-back MVC Player of the Week honors. Overall, this week’s award is Wallace’s third MVC Player of the Week honor this spring, and he is the only player in the league to be honored three times this spring with the award. Wallace and the Purple Aces (23-17 overall, 5-4 MVC) will hit the road this weekend to travel to Omaha, Nebraska to battle league rival Creighton (18-15, 6-9 MVC) in a three-game MVC series. The series will begin Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, before continuing on both Saturday (2:00 p.m.)?and Sunday (1:00 p.m.) afternoon. All three games can be heard live on 91.5 F.M.-WUEV.
