University of Evansville rising sophomore infielder
Eric Stamets (Dublin, Ohio/Scioto) was a member of the victorious North squad on Sunday in the Valley Baseball League’s 2010 All-Star Game, as the North defeated the South, 9-2, at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Stamets was named to the North All-Star Team last week after a strong first-half of play for the Haymarket (Va.) Senators of the Valley Baseball League. So far this summer, Stamets has hit .286 in the wooden-bat Valley League, ranking among the league’s leaders in both hits (10th-32) and runs scored (3rd-26). He has added two doubles and a team-best three home runs, while driving in 13 RBI and going a perfect 8-for-8 in the stolen base department. He has helped Haymarket to an 18-11 overall record through the first-half of play, as the Senators currently sit in second place in the Valley Baseball League standings.
Stamets entered the All-Star game in the fifth inning as a defensive replacement at second base and went 0-for-2 at the plate. Stamets was a consensus Freshman All-America selection this past spring at Evansville after earning first team all-Missouri Valley Conference honors and MVC Freshman of the Year laurels after ranking as the nation’s top freshman stolen base thief with a school-record 43 steals. Overall, Stamets hit .321 this past spring for UE with 15 doubles, four home runs and 27 RBI.
Stamets will be one of 22 letterwinners, including seven position starters, who are scheduled to return for head coach Wes Carroll’s Purple Aces in the spring of 2011.
