The Abby Guerra Donation Fund has been established by her friends to offset a portion of the medical bills that the Guerra family will incur. Checks should be made payable to the Abby Guerra Donation Fund, and sent in care of the University of Evansville Department of Athletics, 1800 Lincoln Ave., Evansville IN 47722. The checks will be forwarded immediately to the fund custodian in Arizona.
Guerra remains in critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, where she has been treated since being seriously injured in a one-vehicle accident July 18 on Interstate 10 west of her hometown of Glendale, Arizona. She was one of five people in the vehicle. Two died in the accident. They were returning from an outing at Disneyland in southern California when the accident occurred at approximately 8:25 p.m. local time. Police believe the driver lost control when a tire blew out, and the vehicle then rolled over.
All returning players on the UE women's soccer team along with the coaching staff and a member of the athletics administration flew to Arizona last Sunday to be with Abby and the Guerra family. Most returned to their homes Tuesday. The team reports to campus on August 3. The first day of practice is August 4, and the first match is August 11 in a home exhibition game against Lipscomb University.
"The first thing on our mind is Abby," said UE Coach Krista McKendree. "We're just wanting the Guerra family to know we are supporting her, and whatever we can do to help, we want to do it. Everyone on the team is thinking good thoughts and saying prayers, and hoping that Abby can continue to have the strength to keep fighting. We can't imagine how hard it is on her family. We just hope they have the strength to keep the positive thoughts coming."
Guerra is a nursing major, with hopes of becoming an emergency room nurse. She made an immediate impact for the Aces' soccer team in the midfield as a freshman last fall, earning a place in the starting lineup during pre-season practice and finishing fourth on the team in goals (2) and points (5).
