EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Indiana University's strong attack proved too much for the University of Evansville women's soccer team Friday night at McCutchan Stadium, and the result was a 3-0 IU victory in the season opener for both teams.
The Hoosiers scored just 1:14 into the match when Carly Samp took advantage of a defensive miscue to score from 10 yards out, past the reach of Aces' goalkeeper Chaviel Harrison. Sophomore forward Orianica Velasquez, who had eight of Indiana's 21 shots, connected on a blast from 12 yards away at 22:55. Rebecca Candler then finished the scoring in the final four minutes when she tucked a shot into the corner past Harrison to make it 3-0.
Indiana put six of its 21 shots on goal, while UE took a total of 10 shots, two on goal. Sophomore forward Kristen Davis and junior midfielder Kasey Cartwright led Evansville with three shots each. Davis and freshman defender Lauren Tiernan had UE's only shots on goal. A trio of Indiana goalkeepers played approximately 30 minutes each, with starter Lauren Hollandsworth getting the win. Harrison played all 90 minutes for the Aces in goal.
Evansville plays again Sunday at Eastern Illinois at 1:00 before returning home one week from Sunday to play Valparaiso.
