It's not been easy scoring goals for the University of Evansville women's soccer team this season, but for a two-minute period Friday at McCutchan Stadium, it sure looked easy.
Lauren Tiernan headed in Stephanie Thompson's corner kick for the night's first tally, at 45:55, and less than two minutes later Kasey Cartwright ended a scramble in front of the net with another goal as the Purple Aces (2-5-1) shut out the Xavier Musketeers (4-4-0) 2-0. Friday's match was the only one at home for UE in September, and evened the Aces' home field record at 1-1-1.
Both teams put up 13 shots, but Evansville had the advantage in shots on goal, 8-3. In fact, Xavier goalkeeper Jennifer Perri turned away two penalty kick attempts, one by Breanna Beine in the first half and the second by Kristen Davis in the second half. Chaviel Harrison and Theresa Elstone split time in goal for the Aces, with Harrison making one save and Elstone two.
The Aces play their third match in five days on Sunday at Miami of Ohio before taking a week off prior to the Missouri Valley Conference opener Sept. 26 at Drake.
