MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- The opportunities had been there. On Sunday, the University of Evansville women's soccer team took advantage of them. The result was UE's first victory of the season, a 2-1 road win over Middle Tennessee in which freshmen
Vanessa Legault-Cordisco and Breanna Beine scored second half goals to put Evansville up 2-0.
"The difference today was our desire to score when we got into the attacking third," said Coach
Krista McKendree. "We've had chances before, but we weren't able to finish them because we didn't have that complete desire. Today I thought we did. It was a great team win."
Evansville's pressure on the Blue Raiders' defense resulted in a foul in the penalty area 20 minutes into the second half, and Legault-Cordisco converted the penalty kick for her first collegiate tally to put Evansville up 1-0 at 65:47. Ten minutes later, the Aces gave themselves a cushion when Legault-Cordisco found classmate Breanna Beine with a cross from the left side. Beine slipped the ball past MTSU goalkeeper Rebecca Cushing to put Evansville up by two. The Aces needed the second goal because the Raiders' Shan Jones scored at 82:15 to bring her team to within a goal.
UE's defense held strong for the final eight minutes, led by goalkeeper
Chaviel Harrison, who made six saves. Legault-Cordisco led the Aces with three shots, and Beine and
Stephanie Thompson had two each. Now 1-3-1, Evansville plays again Friday at Tennesse-Martin at 4:00.
