The University of Evansville’s fifth NCAA championship in men’s basketball came 40 years ago this year, and on January 22 and 23, Aces’ fans will get a chance to salute the team.
The public is invited to attend a luncheon at Eykamp Hall in UE’s Ridgway University Center on Saturday, January 22 at 1:00 in recognition of the 1971 College Division national champions. Cost is $15. For tickets and information, contact Director of Development for Athletics Lance Wilkerson at (812)-488-2623 or by email at lw137@evansville.edu. All surviving members of the 1971 team will be in attendance, as will the current University of Evansville basketball team.
On Sunday, January 23, the 1971 team will be recognized at halftime of the Aces’ game against Bradley, which begins at 1:05.
"University of Evansville basketball tradition is like no other, and UE will always embrace its former players and coaches who make up the fiber of Aces Basketball,” Wilkerson said. “The members of that program continue to be a vital part of Evansville basketball. The UE basketball family will re-live some of its best basketball memories as we celebrate the champs of 1971."
The Aces were 22-8 that season, and defeated Old Dominion University 97-82 in the title game at Roberts Stadium on March 19, 1971. 13,124 fans packed Roberts, making it the second largest crowd in UE history.
The 1971 Aces were coached by Basketball Hall of Famer Arad McCutchan, and assisted by Wayne Boultinghouse and Paul Beck.
