CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Freshman
Natasha James led the way for the University of Evansville tennis team picking up a singles and doubles win on the opening day of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships.
“We had a great day today, our singles played as well as they have all fall,” head coach Nick Mueller said. “We hope to continue to improve over the final two days of the tournament.”
James began the day with a singles win over Corey Mattson from Bradley, where she earned a two-set sweep. In doubles action, James and partner
Dora Kotsiou improved to 6-1 in the fall with a 9-8 win over the top doubles team from Drake. On Saturday, the pair will face off against Southern Illinois.
Kotsiou had a strong day of her own. Along with the doubles victory, the senior earned a singles win over Sarah Rodefeld from Bradley, taking 6-0 and 6-0 victories.
Another freshman,
Gaby Fifer, grabbed her third singles win of the fall. Fifer took 7-6 and 6-1 set wins over Krissy Lankelma of Northern Iowa.
Play resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Byrnes Tennis Center in Cedar Falls.
