EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The University of Evansville tennis team came back from a 1-0 deficit following the doubles matches Saturday night to defeat Illinois State, 4-3 and make for a great Senior Night for Kate Chybowski, Ashton Schwerin and Pin Sorensen.
But it was junior Aleksandra Dzakula who broke the 3-3 tie and gave Evansville its 12th victory of the season and third straight victory this week. Dzakula dropped the first set to Carolina Abello, but came back with 6-3 and 6-1 victories to pull out the late night win at Tri-State Athletic Club. The match was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Carson Center, but rain forced the match to move indoors Saturday night.
The win improved coach Nick Mueller's Aces to 4-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference, and puts them as the fourth seed in the eight-team State Farm MVC Tournament next weekend at St. Louis. Evansville is now 12-7 overall. Illinois State is 7-12 and 3-4 in the league.
"This was a huge boost," Mueller said afterward. "Three wins this week, capped off by a win on Senior Night over a team we haven't beaten for a long time; that was awesome.
"The weather never cooperated this weekend, but we kept our patience going indoors, and the people at Tri-State Athletic Club were very accommodating to us. That's a wonderful facility for our tennis program. And then to come through in singles the way we did was great. It's going to make for a very good Easter."
