BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Despite a 2-0 deficit at the half Friday night versus Indiana University, the University of Evansville women’s soccer team battled back to end in a 2-2 draw to open the 2011 regular season.
The Hoosiers struck first when Orianica Velasquez found the upper left corner of the net on a free kick just 3:25 minutes into the match. Freshman Rebecca Dreher put IU up 2-0 at the 39:28 mark when a deflected ball landed perfectly for her to be able to sneak one past goalkeeper
Chaviel Harrison.
However, that would be the last time a Hoosier would find the net, as the momentum shifted in favor of the Aces in the second period.
On a corner kick from Prentice, Cartwright sent the ball into the back corner of the goal from the middle of the box to cut UE’s deficit in half at the 71:25 mark.
Just under eighth minutes later (79:08) Evansville tied it up when an Indiana defender cleared the ball out of the box, but Langness made a heads-up attack, charged at the ball, and made a perfectly arched shot over the head of goalie Shannon Flower into the back of the net.
The Aces made the most of their seven shots, as IU earned a 26-7 shot advantage. Facing a barrage of balls, Harrison finished with nine saves, playing all 110:00 minutes. The junior made a few spectacular saves to preserve the tie at the end of regulation and through overtime, as well.
Evansville is back in action Sunday, when they travel to take on Saint Louis University at 1:00 p.m. CT.
