BOX SCORE
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women’s soccer team posted an impressive 3-0 win over visiting Indiana State in its final home regular-season match of the 2012 season Wednesday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
The Purple Aces (4-7-3, 3-1-1 MVC) were led by freshman
Abby Springer, who scored the game-winning goal in the 24th minute and was credited with an assist later in the contest. Fellow freshman
Kayla Smith added a goal in the 55th minute and freshman goalkeeper
Simone Busby picked up her fourth shutout of the season by making six saves.
In an evenly played first half, UE took advantage of a miscue in the Sycamore (6-9-1, 1-3-0 MVC) backfield, as Springer collected a loose ball, dribbled into the box and found the back of the net from 10 yards out for her fifth goal of the season. Evansville fired five shots to ISU’s four and Busby made a pair saves to preserve a 1-0 lead at the break.
Smith doubled the Aces’ advantage early in the second half, finishing a cross from Springer just over nine minutes into the stanza. Springer dribbled up the right side of the pitch, before sending a ball to the middle of the box that found the right foot of Smith.
Evansville’s lead increased to 3-0 in the 80th minute, when a corner kick service deflected off the head of an Indiana State defender and ended up in the back of the Sycamore net for an own goal.
Springer and
Allie Arguello led UE offensively with two shots each, while four other Aces got into the shot column. Busby made four second-half saves and lowered her goals against average to 0.38.
Evansville will wrap up its regular-season Saturday in Omaha, Neb., as UE will travel to Creighton for a 4:30 p.m. match with the Bluejays.
