BOX SCORE
OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Evansville women’s soccer team closed its regular season with a 1-0 win over Creighton Saturday night in Omaha, Neb., to improve to 4-1-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play, its best league finish since going 5-1-0 in 2008.
Junior
Stephanie Thompson scored the only goal of the match in the 79th minute, firing in a shot from 15 yards out. The goal was Thompson’s fourth of the season and was one of only three shots for Evansville (5-7-3, 4-1-1 MVC) in the second half.
The Aces controlled the possession and tempo in the early part of the first half, taking four shots in the first 15 minutes, but it was all Creighton (3-11-2, 0-5-0 MVC) the rest of the evening.
The Bluejays outshot UE, 25-9, over the course of the match, but Evansville goalkeeper
Simone Busby made eight saves, including six in the second stanza, to post her fifth clean sheet of the year.
Creighton’s best opportunity came midway through the first half when Kaelyn Korte hit the crossbar in the 23rd minute.
Freshman
Abby Springer led Evansville offensively with three shots and was the only UE player to attempt multiple shots. Creighton’s Lauren Cingoranelli led all players with five shot attempts and put four on goal. Three other Bluejays got off four shots each and 11 CU players accounted for Creighton’s 25 attempts.
With the win, the Aces finished their conference slate with a 4-1-1 record and are currently in second place in the Valley standings behind Drake. Evansville will have to wait for the rest of the conference teams to finish league play next weekend to see what its seed will be for the MVC Tournament. UE will automatically advance to the quarterfinal round by finishing first or second in the final league standings or host an opening round game on Oct. 28 by finishing third or fourth.
