JONESBORO, Ark. – In the first of four games this weekend at Arkansas State, the University of Evansville baseball team fell, 4-2, after the hosting Red Wolves came from behind to top UE Friday night at Tomlinson Stadium.
The loss drops the Aces record to 1-2 on the season, while A-State improves to 2-3.
“Our pitching gave us another chance to win tonight with
Cole Isom throwing a great game,” said head coach
Wes Carroll. “We just didn’t take advantage of some scoring opportunities, and didn’t get the big hit when we needed it.
“We’re doing a great job of creating opportunities and having quality at-bats, but we’re still trying to figure out our identity as an offensive group,” added Carroll. “I look forward to tomorrow with 18 innings of baseball to play and a quick turnaround. Our boys have to be ready to compete.”
Evansville took the intial lead, 2-0, in the first inning after Arkansas State starter Jacob Lee walked Eric Stamets, hit
Jake Mahon, walked
Chris Pearson to load the bases, and then with one out walked Nate Snellgrove, plating Stamets for a quick head start. Junior
Andy Lasher’s sacrifice fly to left field brought in Mahon who tagged from third, but that would be UE’s last run as the Red Wolves pitching staff settled down the rest of the night.
Not allowing a hit through the first three innings, the Red Wolves finally figured out UE starter
Cole Isom in the bottom of the fourth, recording three hits and four runs to take the lead for good. Michael Faulkner led off the rally with a single up the middle and stole second with one out. He scored on Logan Uxa’s single to right-center. With runners on first and second and two outs, after a walk and strikeout, Alex Potts drove in Uxa, tying the score 2-2. ASU took the lead on an unearned run after a misplayed ball at second.
A-State added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh when Stuart Levy led off with a double to left-center off reliever
Tyler Miller. Levy advanced to second on a sac bunt and scored on Nick Tayor’s RBI double, giving ASU a 4-2 advantage.
In the eighth, Evansville had their best chance to answer back, as Pearson led off with a single through the left side. With two outs, Lasher kept the rally alive, singling to third, and
Jason Hockemeyer’s walk loaded the base. However, ASU reliever John Koch got the Red Wolves out of the jam with a fielder’s choice.
Taking another hard luck loss, Isom (0-2) tossed five innings, allowing three runs, two earned, five hits, two walks, while striking out three. Out of the bullpen, Miller threw 2.0 innings, giving up one earned run and two hits.
Lee earned the win (1-0) for ASU, hurling six innings, allowing two runs, four hits, three walk, and struck out eight, while Koch took the save.
Stamets (2-4), Lasher (2-3), and Hockemeyer (2-3) each recorded multiple hits for UE.
The Aces are back in action tomorrow when the four-game series continues. Saturday’s doubleheader is set to start at 1:00 p.m. CT.
Sam Johns and
Kyle Lloyd will be on the mound for Evansville.
