JONESBORO, Ark. – In the nightcap of Saturday’s doubleheader at Tomlinson Stadium, the University of Evansville baseball team scored four runs in the first inning en route to a 5-1 win over Arkansas State.
The victory improves UE’s record to 2-3 on the season and 1-2 versus the Red Wolves this weekend.
“After getting beat by one run in the first game and bouncing back to score four runs in the first inning of the second was a big momentum shifter for us,” said head coach
Wes Carroll. “We had a good productive day offensively knocking out 22 hits.
Kyle Lloyd really competed for us and threw a great game.
“Going into tomorrow, hopefully we can split the series and head back home with a win,” added Carroll.

Eric Stamets got the bats going for the Aces right away, leading off with a single to left-centerfield. Junior

Chris Pearson reached on a fielder’s choice, and an errant throw allowed Stamets to score the first run of the ball game.
Kevin Kaczmarski knocked home Pearson with a single to right-center, and crossed the plate himself on
Jason Hockemeyer’s two-out triple to left-centerfield, giving UE a 4-0 head start.
Evansville added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when freshman
Kyle Pollock and Hockemeyer led off with back-to-back singles. Sophomore
David Patton brought Pollock home with a single to left-center to put UE up, 5-0.
Alex Pott’s leadoff triple off reliever
Jake Naumann in the bottom of the eighth inning led to A-State’s lone run of the game. Naumann retired the next three consecutive batters, but an infield groundout allowed Potts to spoil the combined shutout.
Lloyd (2-0) earned the win, tossing six scoreless innings, allowing six hits, a walk, and struck out three. Out of the bullpen, Naumann threw two innings, allowing one run, one hit, while striking out two. Sophomore
Peter Spear closed the ninth with no hits allowed, a walk, and one strike out.
Bradley Wallace (0-1) took the loss for ASU, giving up five runs, nine hits, a walk, and struck out four in six innings.
The Aces recorded 10 hits in the game, led by Hockemeyer and
Jake Mahon’s 2-for-4 performances. Stamets (1-5), Lasher (1-3), Kaczmarski (1-4), Pollock (1-4), Patton (1-3), and
Tim Bodine (1-1) also recorded one hit apiece in the nightcap.
The Aces close out the four-game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. CT. Freshman
Kyle Freeland will be on the mound for UE.
