EVANSVILLE, Ind. – With both hurlers going the distance in the fast-paced, one hour and 56 minute contest, the Indiana State University Sycamores scattered single runs in the fourth and seventh innings, to edge the University of Evansville baseball team, 2-0, Friday night at Braun Stadium.

The Aces fall to 14-8 on the season, while Indiana State improves to 18-4.

Junior right-hander Dakota Bacus for the Sycamores and lefty sophomore Cole Isom dueled through all nine innings, combining for 18 strikeouts and each faced just seven over the minimum number of batters. Bacus (4-1) earned the win, scattering four hits, two walks, and struck out 13, while Isom (1-3) took the hard-luck loss giving up nine hits, a walk, and struck out five.

Indiana State broke the stalemate in the fourth inning when the top of the order, Landon Curry and Koby Kraemer, lined back-to-back singles, and Isom registered a walk to load the bases with no outs. Jeremy Lucas’ sacrifice fly scored the lone run of the frame, as Isom got out of the inning with a lineout double play.

The Sycamores scored their second run of the night in the seventh when Robby Ort lined a triple off the right field wall and scored on Lucas’ RBI double off the left field wall.

Evansville’s best chances to score in the night came in the second, sixth ,and eighth innings. Kevin Kaczmarski belted a two-out triple to the right-centerfield gap in the bottom of the second, but Bacus recorded a strikeout to end the side. Trentt Copeland lined his 51st career double with two outs in the sixth, but again, Bacus retired the next batter. UE put a runner on third in the eighth when Eric Stamets was hit by a pitch, advanced on a failed pickoff, and moved to third on a wild pitch. However, Bacus tallied another 'K' to end the inning.

UE threatened in the bottom of the ninth, as Kyle Pollock and Kaczmarski walked consecutively with two outs, bringing what would be the go-ahead run, pinch hitter Nate Snellgrove to the plate. Snellgrove got a good piece of his first pitch, but centerfielder Lucas Hileman made the catch for the final out of the contest.

Stamets, Copeland, Kaczmarski, and Chris Pearson each recorded one hit in the contest.

Game two of Missouri Valley Conference opening weekend begins at 2:00 p.m. CT Saturday at Braun Stadium. In support of a family who lost their home in a large fire this past week, fans who bring baby clothes (0-3 month), newborn Huggies Swaddler diapers, formula, bottles and other baby items will receive free admission to the game.
