COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Evansville baseball team won its fourth consecutive game Friday afternoon, overcoming the hosting Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, 4-1, at Bush Stadium. The Aces improved their record to 8-5 on the season in the first of three games this weekend against TTU.
“We grinded out another win behind a great pitching effort by
Cole Isom,
Jake Naumann and
Josh Biggs,” said head coach
Wes Carroll. “Defensively, we made every play including some great ones by
Eric Stamets up the middle. Offensively, we were sparked by
Jake Mahon’s multi-hit game and big RBI and
Jason Hockemeyer ‘s two hits. We’re creating great opportunities offensively; we just need to continue to capitalize with situational hitting.
“I’m really happy with the win streak we have going, and hopefully we can keep it rolling tomorrow with
Kyle Lloyd on the mound,” added Carroll.
Isom (1-2) earned the win, allowing just one run and four scattered hits in seven full innings of work. In relief, Naumann hurled a scoreless eighth, allowing one hit, while closer Biggs recorded his third save of the year with a perfect ninth inning, including two strikeouts.
At the plate, Mahon (2-for-5) and Hockemeyer (2-for-4) piloted UE, as the squad recorded seven hits. Junior Andrew Lasher scored three of the Aces’ four runs in the contest.
Evansville built a 3-0 lead, scoring an unearned run in the third and crossed the plate twice in the fifth. Lasher logged UE’s first run of the night, reaching on a walk and scored following two errors by TTU with two outs. The Golden Eagles made four errors total in the game.
In the fifth, Lasher and
Tim Bodine led off with back-to-back hits, as Lashed lined a double to left-centerfield and advanced to third on Bodine’s single to the left side of the infield. Lasher tagged home on Stamets’ sacrifice fly, and Bodine scored on Mahon’s RBI double down the right field line.
TTU scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth as leadoff hitter Dylan Bosheers singled to reach base, advanced to third following a walk and hit batter, and scored on an infield groundout.
Evansville stretched its lead to 4-1 in the ninth with another unearned as Lasher crossed the plate for the third time in the game. Lasher walked, moved up to second on Bodine’s sac bunt and scored on an error on Mahon’s ball to left field.
Tech starter Tristan Archer (2-1) took the loss, tossing eight innings, allowing three runs, two earned, seven hits, and struck out nine.
The three-game series continues tomorrow when UE and TTU take the field at 2:00 p.m. CT.
