OMAHA, Neb. – Senior Trentt Copeland roped his first home run of the season and sixth long-ball of his career to lead off the top of the fifth inning, representing the only run of the ballgame Sunday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park as the University of Evansville topped Creighton, 1-0, to win the series 2-1. Freshman southpaw Kyle Freeland tossed the complete game shutout, scattering just three hits, allowed one walk, and struck out six.

The series win marks UE’s first over the Jays since 2006, as the Aces improve to 18-10 on the season and 3-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Creighton falls to 12-13 overall and 1-5 in the MVC.

Throwing a perfect game into the fifth inning, Freeland (2-3) allowed just one hit per inning in the fifth, sixth, and seventh, and ended the game in style with a punch out.

Creighton starter Shane Liska (0-1) took the loss, dueling with Freeland through the first four frames. Liska allowed just a solo home run to Copeland, four hits, a walk, and struck out five. Nick Musec and Reese McGraw came out of the pen for CU, allowing one hit in the final four innings.

Copeland led the Aces with his 2-for-4 performance as UE recorded five hits on the afternoon.

The Aces are back in action Tuesday when they travel to SIU Edwardsville for a non-conference contest before resuming Valley play next weekend at Southern Illinois.
