EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
It was a special day at the University of Evansville Cross Country Course as senior Kelby Jenkins set the Purple Aces 5K school record while Josh Genet paced the men's team with a second-place finish at the Evansville Invitational on Saturday.

Jenkins won the 5K with a time of 17:27.27, topping Andrea Sonnenschein's mark that was set in 2007.  Her old record was a 17:30.  Jenkins was in front for the majority of the race, winning by a margin of 11 seconds over Lindsey Hinken of Western Kentucky.  Making the feat that much more special is that Jenkins only had two more chances (including today) to earn the record as she has come within seconds of doing so earlier this year in adverse conditions.

"Kelby has worked very hard; no one I have every coached in my life is a coachable as she is.  She will do anything that you tell her to do and she believes in what she is doing," head coach Don Walters said.  "If you would have told me before the race that with the conditions here and the rain that we have had, I cannot believe that she pulled this off today."

"She knows where she is at all times; she can go out there without a watch and set a pace and know what that is," Walters said.  "That is what makes an All American.  I knew how long it would be to make it from the 3-mile line to the finish and she had to put on the jets up a hill to make it."

Jenkins' efforts helped the Aces finish the day in third place out of eight teams.  She led the 80 runners in the event.  Coming home in seventh place was Laurel Wolfe, who ran the first sub-19 minute 5K event of her collegiate career as she ran a time of 18:45.23.  Just behind her was junior Nicole Kreuzman, who ran a PR of her own, conquering the course in a time of 19:13.64 to take 13th.

Finishing in 15th was Elizabeth Kingshott with a 19:27.35 while Kirsten Perrey was just behind her in 16thMaria Lynn also registered a top 20 finish, taking 18th with her 19:36.88.  Taking top team honors on the women's side was Western Kentucky, who had five finishers in the top 11 positions.

The men were led by junior Josh Genet, who ran a tough race before taking second place with a time of 25:39.09.  He finished behind winner David Mokone of WKU, who paced the 70 runners with a time of 25:20.86.  Genet has been the top male runner for UE in every event this season while recording a top 12 finish in five out of six outings thus far.

All season long, Evansville's freshmen have been pivotal to the success of the team and today was no different as Ross Frondorf was the second UE runner to cross the line.  He set a PR with a time of 26:48.55, topping his previous mark by 10 seconds to finish in 14th.

"Ross did an outstanding job for the men and a few of our guys set PR's," Walters said.  "Josh (Genet) was outstanding today, he is a class athlete that you want to have up front for you"

Sophomore Jon Ashby posted an 8K time of 27:26.99 to take 24th while Ben Woolems (27:43.93) and Kyle Wilson (PR-27:56.62) rounded out the Aces' top five runners on the day.  Marshall University was the top finisher on the men's side while Evansville took third out of eight total teams.

"This is our home course and our kids believe that they can win on this course.  This is the shot in the arm that we need as we head to conference," Walters explained.  "Our confidence on both sides is very high and for us to come out and compete the way we did in the conditions that we faced, both teams were very happy."

The MVC Championships are just two weeks away as the Aces will make the trip to Des Moines, Iowa for the races on Saturday, Nov. 2.

A few old friends came back to run on the men's side, including Nick Waninger, who posted the sixth best time overall at 26:03.36.  Brian Denny took 15th with a time of 26:54.67.
