EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Six former student-athletes and one administrator and longtime contributor of the program comprise the 2013 University of Evansville Athletics Hall of Fame class.
The seven new members include: Charlie Fisher (football), Reed Jackson (men's basketball), Jessica Jetton (women's tennis), Jessica Kiefer (women's volleyball), Rebekah Legan (formerly Parker, women's basketball), John MacCauley III (baseball) and John MacCauley Jr. (administrator).
"On behalf of the University of Evansville and the athletics department, I extend my congratulations to each of the seven members of this year's Hall of Fame class," UE Athletics Director John Stanley said. "Each made a significant contribution in their time as student-athletes and we are proud to recognize their achievements in a permanent way."
In what is sure to be a great moment for the MacCauley family, John Jr. and III were voted into the 2013 class. Aces fans remember John Jr. from his 27 seasons spent at the microphone as the public address voice at men's basketball games. A 1973 UE grad, MacCauley later returned as the Director of Development and was the president of the Purple Aces Club at the time of his death in 2012.
His son, John MacCauley III was a star in his own for the Purple Aces. A 4-year starting pitcher for the baseball team, he pitched for UE from 1989 through 1992 where he recorded 33 wins, a total that is third on the all-time Aces list. His top efforts came in 1991 where he was named an ABCA All-American and was named the MCC Player of the Year. The 1991 season also saw him win 13 games, second-most for a UE player in a single season.
MacCauley was drafted by the Chicago White Sox following his junior campaign, but elected to return to school for his senior year where he was drafted by the Oakland Athletics and spent two years in their organization.
Former football player and Evansville native Charlie Fisher received induction following his successful playing career at UE and a coaching career that spanned five decades. Fisher was a letterwinner at UE from 1951-53 after his high school career at Reitz. Once recruited by Bear Bryant, Fisher won the Kiwanis Sportsmanship Award in 1953 as an Outstanding Football Scholar.
In 1954, he began his coaching career at Mississinewa High School where he coached until 1976 before taking over again from 1981 through 1994. Fisher led his squads to 13 conference championships as a coach and the field at Mississinewa HS was named in his honor. For his achievements, he was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in August of 2006.
Fan favorite and 1998 Illinois Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Reed Jackson represents the UE men's basketball team with his induction. Jackson played for the Aces during the transition from the MCC to the Missouri Valley Conference where he was named a 2
nd Team All-Conference player in both leagues.
Along with teammate Andy Elkins, Jackson shared the 1995 Slyker Award, which is given to the top male student-athlete. Jackson set the UE steals record, which stood until last season. He remains 35
th in school history with 1,101 points and fourth in assists with 437 in his career.
Two-time UE female athlete of the year Jessica Jetton is only the fifth women's tennis player to be inducted into the hall. She posted 157 combined victories in her career, third in the Aces record book.
Jetton put forth a consistent career that saw her earn three All-MVC selections, three berths on the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team and three ITA All-America Scholar Athlete nods. She was also a finalist for the 2005 Academic All-America Team.
Rewriting a record book is hard to do for anyone, but volleyball great Jessica Kiefer made it look easy. Though her last season at UE was in the fall of 2001, Kiefer still sits atop the record book with 1,706 kills, 576 total blocks, 178 solo blocks and 398 block assists.
Kiefer was a 4-time All-MVC player and also made her mark on the Valley record book as her final tally of solo blocks ranks fourth all-time in conference history.
Last but not least, Rebekah Legan (Parker) led a turnaround of the women's basketball program at UE and earned several accolades along the way. The No. 3 scorer in program history earned MVC honors in each of her four seasons. The All-Freshman Team member in 2005 was an honorable mention in 2006 before garnering first team All-Conference honors as a junior and senior.
Her honors expanded beyond the MVC as she was named to the Lowe's Senior All-America Team in 2008 while earning the Ida Stieler Award in her final two years at UE. The all-time free throw leader at UE continues to rank third in steals (197) and fifth in rebounds with 653.
