EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Evansville women's soccer team will hold its annual Senior Day Sunday at 1 p.m., when the Purple Aces host Western Kentucky at Arad McCutchan Stadium. Prior to the match, UE will honor its two seniors,
Stephanie Thompson and
Lauren Tiernan.
Evansville (9-4-2) will be looking to end a two-match losing streak, as the Aces were defeated, 4-0, by Illinois State last Sunday. Freshman
Bronwyn Boswell led UE with three shots and sophomore goalkeeper
Simone Busby made a career-high 12 saves in the loss to the Redbirds. In addition, Evansville will be looking to get on the scoreboard for the first time since a 2-1 win at Northern Iowa, as the Aces have been shut out in their last three contests.
Sophomore
Kayla Smith leads UE with 14 points on five goals and four assists this season, while Tiernan ranks second on the squad with eight points on three goals and two helpers. Sophomore
Abby Springer has found the back of the net three times and recorded an assist for seven points, and Thompson has added six points on a trio of goals. Busby has played all but 20 minutes in goal for Evansville this season and enters Sunday's tilt with a 0.78 goals against average, .840 save percentage, 63 saves and five solo shutouts.
As a team, the Aces have outscored their opponents, 20-12, but have been outscored, 5-0, in their last three games. UE has also posted a 119-75 shot on goal advantage and a 75-61 corner kick margin. Evansville's defense has recorded six shutouts on the season and boasts a 0.77 goals against average. Last Sunday's loss at Illinois State marked the first time this season that the Aces had conceded multiple goals in a match.
Western Kentucky (8-4-4) has won seven of its last eight games and will host Georgia State tonight, before making the trip to Evansville. The Lady Toppers downed Arkansas-Little Rock, 1-0, their last time out, as Iris Dunn netted the game-winner in the 79th minute and goalkeeper Nora Abolins made four saves to post her eighth shutout of the year.
Dunn leads WKU with five goals and 11 points, Lauren Moats ranks second on the team with six points on three goals and Chrissy Tchoula has dished out a team-best three assists. Between the posts, Abolins has allowed just 11 goals in 1476 minutes for a 0.67 goals against average to go with 57 saves and eight shutouts.
Western Kentucky has scored 14 goals, while holding its opponents to 12 and has outshot its foes, 218-189. The Lady Toppers have put 85 shots on goal for a .390 shot on goal percentage and have attempted 65 corner kicks, with 44 of them coming in the second half or later.
Last season, WKU defeated Evansville, 3-0, in Bowling Green, Ky., in the Aces' season opener. Amanda Buechel scored twice for Western Kentucky and Nicholette Sartori added a third goal for the Lady Toppers midway through the second half. Smith and Thompson each fired three shots to lead the Aces.
