TROY, Ala. – The University of Evansville softball team (0-5) fell to Troy, 5-3, as the weekend wrapped up at the Troy Invitational in Troy, Ala.
The Aces’ offense was able to tally three RBI’s by three different players, while seniors
Halie Malone and
Kendall Kautz led UE at the plate, each going 2-for-3 on the day. Malone notched her first double of the season while currently leading the Aces with a .500 batting average.
Evansville will take the field next at the Jackson State Tournament, traveling to Jackson, Miss. to take part in a three-day series beginning on February 22 that includes host Jackson State and Nebraska-Omaha. The Aces’ first pitch will take place at 3:00 p.m. CST on Friday against Nebraska-Omaha.

Troy’s lead came all at once in the bottom of the second, first with a bunt that allowed the Trojans to take a 1-0 lead early. After a pair of stolen bases and a throwing error by Evansville, Troy extended its lead, 2-0, over the Aces. Singles by the Trojans and a ground out to first base allowed for a three-run advance, making it a 5-0 game to end the inning.
The Aces soon answered back in the top of the third when Malone doubled down the left field line and senior
Tamara Robey singled up the middle to bring Malone in for the run, making it 5-1 with the Trojans still in the lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Evansville was able to put up two more runs in the top of the fifth after sophomore
Kayla Fortner walked, allowing senior
Brianna Villanueva to score. Kautz was able to single through the left side to bring in Robey for the run, tallying a 5-3 score to end the inning.
The Trojans were able to hold off the Aces in the seventh with a strikeout and couple of pop ups to second base, ending the game in a 5-3 win by Troy.
Troy pitcher Rachel Rigney, now 3-1 on the season, took the win for the Trojans, pitching 7.0 innings with six strikeouts and only allowing one run. Freshman
Annie Moore was charged with the loss, pitching 2.0 innings and allowing four runs. Freshman
Sarah Baldwin pitched 2.1 innings, while tallying one strikeout before junior
Taylor Perry came in at relief, tossing three strikeouts for the Aces during 1.2 innings pitched.
