UE Softball Splits with Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –
Aces softball split in its doubleheader with Indiana State in today’s contest as Evansville took a game one shutout, 2-0, before dropping in game two, 8-4.
 
Sophomore Kayla Fortner led the offensive charge as she went 3-for-5 at bat with a notable three doubles, three RBIs, two runs, and one walk on the day. Seniors Tamara Robey and Kendall Kautz also helped to lead UE as each went 2-for-6 at the plate while combining for two runs, two doubles, and three RBIs.
 
Evansville (20-27, 11-11) will look to take the series win on Sunday, April 28, as they wrap up the three-game series with Indiana State beginning at 11:00 a.m. CST.
 
Game 1: Indiana State 0, UE 2
With a quick and scoreless first three innings, the Aces put the first run of the game on the board in the top of the fourth after a double by Fortner placed her in scoring position. Kautz then notched an RBI single up the middle to drive in Fortner and make it 1-0, with UE in the lead.
 
As Indiana State struggled against Evansville’s defense and senior pitcher Sarah Patterson, the Aces were able to continue leaving the Sycamores scoreless in the fourth and fifth frames. UE’s second run of the game came off back-to-back doubles in the top of the sixth inning by Robey and Fortner as the Aces expanded their lead, 2-0.
 
Indiana State was able to produce two hits in the bottom half of the seventh, but left two runners stranded as Evansville was able to take the game one victory, 2-0.
 
Patterson picked up the win for the Aces to improve to 13-9 in the circle. Patterson shut down the Sycamores as she recorded five strikeouts in 7.0 innings while not allowing any runs.
 
Indiana State pitcher Halle Humphrey suffered the loss as she moved to 4-16 on the season. Humphrey pitched 7.0 innings while allowing two runs and tallying one strikeout.
 
Game 2: Indiana State 8, UE 4
The Sycamores took a quick lead over the Aces in the bottom of first frame after a reach on a fielder’s choice gave them a 1-0 lead over UE. Indiana State continued to stretch the lead further after a pair of doubles to right center that drove in two runs as they made it a 3-0 game over Evansville heading into the top of the second.
 
With a scoreless second for the Aces, Indiana State did not relent as another big inning for them came as they tacked on three more runs after a wild pitch and a two RBI double to right field expanded their lead, 6-0.
 
Evansville finally answered back in the top of the third with a four run and four hit inning that allowed them to inch closer to the Sycamores lead. With yet another double to right field by Fortner that drove in two runners to home plate, Kautz also doubled and drove in the last pair to make it a 6-4 game with Indiana State still in the lead.
 
While still maintaining the lead, the Sycamores tallied another run to further the score, 7-4, in the bottom half of the third with an RBI single to the short stop. Another run was added in the fourth for Indiana State with a ground out to the pitcher that allowed a runner to reach home plate and make it an 8-4 lead.
 
With scoreless fifth and sixth innings, the Aces tried to produce some runs in the seventh but fell short after grounding into a double play and cinching the last out with a fly to center field. Indiana State was able to end the inning and the game with an 8-4 victory over Evansville.
 
Humphrey picked up the win for the Sycamores as she improved to 5-16 after pitching 7.0 innings in the circle and striking out four while allowing four runs.
 
UE freshman pitcher Sarah Baldwin suffered the loss as she moved to 3-7 on the season. Baldwin allowed six runs and issued three walks in 1.2 innings. Reliever Annie Moore came in for the Aces to pitch 4.1 innings and strike out two while allowing two runs.
