COOKEVILLE, Tenn. –
The University of Evansville women's soccer team overcame an early goal to earn its first victory of the 2013 season in dominating fashion, as the Purple Aces outshot Tennessee Tech, 27-5, en route to a 2-1 win Sunday afternoon in Cookeville, Tenn.

Freshman Emily Griebel and senior Stephanie Thompson each scored a goal for Evansville (1-1-0) and Thompson's tally in the 49th minute proved to be the game-winner.  Defensively, the Aces limited Tennessee Tech (0-2-0) to just five shots and allowed the Golden Eagles to fire only one shot in the second half.

Tennessee Tech wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Ellie Iaciofano put the Golden Eagles up 1-0 with a goal just 48 seconds into the match.  Iaciofano took a pass from Katie Phillips, dribbled up the right side and connected on the shot.

Evansville responded and dominated the rest of the half, taking 17 first-half shots to TTU's four.  Griebel pulled the Aces level in the 37th minute by scoring her first collegiate goal, as she collected a loose ball in the middle of the field and was able to beat Tennessee Tech goalkeeper Jordan Brown, who came off of her line in an attempt to prevent the opportunity.

UE put nine shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, but were unable to beat Brown for a second time as the score remained tied at 1-1 at the intermission.

Evansville continued to apply pressure to start the second half and took a 2-1 lead on Thompson's goal in the 49th minute.  Sophomore Abby Springer played a pass to Thompson off of a loose ball on the left side of the back, before Thompson finished the chance with a shot that deflected in off the hands of the goalkeeper.

The Aces continued to create chances throughout the rest of the half, forcing Brown to make four more saves in the second stanza.

Freshman Bronwyn Boswell led UE with six shots and three shots on goal, sophomore Kayla Smith added five shots and put two on frame as reserve and Springer attempted four shots, with a pair of them being on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Simone Busby earned her first win of 2013 without making a save, as Evansville held Tennessee Tech to just one shot on goal.

The Aces will be back in next Friday, Aug. 30, when they welcome UT Martin to Arad McCutchan Stadium.  Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
