Women’s Soccer Tops Valparaiso, 2-1

EVANSVILLE, Ind. –
The University of Evansville women's soccer team pushed its unbeaten streak to four games Sunday afternoon, as the Purple Aces defeated visiting Valparaiso, 2-1, at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
 
Sophomore Abby Springer and freshman Bronwyn Boswell each scored a goal for Evansville (5-2-1) and sophomore goalkeeper Simone Busby made two saves in the Aces' third win in their last four contests.
 
Springer got Evansville on the board in the 36th minute, finishing a cross from senior Lauren Tiernan.  Tiernan dribbled up the right wing, before sending in a service to an unmarked Springer, who finished the chance from five yards out.
 
Springer's tally would be the only tally of the half, as the Aces outshot the Crusaders (4-3-1), 8-4, in the opening half and held Valpo to just one shot on goal, an attempt by Kristen Warner in the 18th minute.
 
UE doubled its lead in the in the 50th minute on Boswell's first career goal, as she was on the receiving end of a corner kick service from fellow freshman Emily Richardson.  Richardson sent in a cross from the right side of the pitch to the middle of the box, where Boswell was there to volley the ball past Valparaiso goalkeeper Kristen Manski.
 
The Crusaders pushed numbers forward for the remainder of the half and were able to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 85th minute.  Jenny Fassbinder gained possession just outside of the box on the left side of the field, before dribbling to the top of the box and firing a shot into the upper, left corner of the frame.
 
Following Fassbinder's goal, Evansville as able to hold off Valpo's attack for the rest of the half to secure the win and improve to 5-2-1 on the year.
 
Springer led the Aces offensively with five shots, including three shots on goal.  Sophomore Kayla Smith added four shots and senior Stephanie Thompson fired three attempts.
 
Fassbinder led Valparaiso with three shots, as the UE back line held the Crusaders to just nine shots and only allowed three to reach frame.
 
For the match, Evansville outshot Valpo, 21-9, and attempted eight corner kicks to Valparaiso's seven.
 
The Aces will be on the road for their next two matches, as they return to action Friday at 4 p.m. against Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Ky., before traveling to Bowling Green for a 12 p.m. matchup Sunday afternoon.
